Bob lounges lazily atop a wall when Needlepaw charges up to him, greeting him. Startled, Bob emerges from his daze, inquiring how he can assist the two apprentices. Needlepaw explains that they're Clan cats needing to cross the river to get back to their territories. She asks if he knows a way across, prompting Alderpaw's concern at Needlepaw giving out so much information to the kittypet. Dismissing his worries, Alderpaw reassures himself that the kittypet likely didn't understand her.

The kittypet asks if they're involved with the cats that came at sunrise, and Alderpaw eagerly questions him if the cats he saw were a cream-and-brown tom, a ginger she-cat, and a younger orange tabby. Bob confirms it, mentioning their distress over losing two young cats. Alderpaw asks where for their destination, and Bob points down an alleyway toward a bridge downstream.

Alderpaw then asks if he had seen a bigger group of cats traveling through Twolegplace, but Bob hasn't seen them. Needlepaw requests help with food, and Bob offers some, leading them into a small den. Alderpaw hesitates, but Needlepaw ventures in. After eating, he and Needlepaw thank Bob and bid him farewell. Bob wishes them good luck on the rest of their journey and they depart.
