"I want to be able to help the Clan. If I were a medicine cat I could heal my Clanmates when they were sick and I could share dreams with StarClan. As a warrior I could feed the Clan and defend it-I would die to protect the Clan if I had to-but as a warrior I would be limited to fighting with tooth and claw. As a medicine cat I could fight with all the knowledge and power of StarClan. What better way could there be to serve ThunderClan?"

Hollyleaf is a long-legged,[1] black she-cat[2] with soft[3] and long fur,[4] sharp,[5] holly leaf-like[1] green eyes,[6] and a bushy tail.[7]

Hollykit was the firstborn of her litter and made the journey back to her real home in ThunderClan. Leafpool wanted to call her Crowkit in honor of Crowfeather, but Squirrelflight convinced her to instead go with Hollykit. Her adoptive father is Brambleclaw, and her adoptive mother is Squirrelflight.

When she and her siblings heard of a few fox pups in the territory, they all went off to find them. This ended badly and resulted in Jaykit to have nearly died. She and her brothers were taken care of by Daisy and Ferncloud.

Hollypaw was intrigued by Leafpool's ability of herbs and healing and asked to become her apprentice. Much to her excitement, she did. However, this was short-lived, and she became stressed and could not understand how to remember every herb or how to use them. She asked to train as a warrior instead and got apprenticed by Brackenfur. Hollypaw was very good at her training and the Warrior Code meant everything to her.

When she found out that she may be part of a prophecy ("There will be three, kin of your kin, who hold the power of the stars in their paws") she was interested, and she was at the time most likely the smarts and courage of the three. When three WindClan kits went missing, Hollypaw, Lionpaw, Jaypaw, Breezepaw, and Heatherpaw went looking for them in the tunnels.

Hollypaw was made Hollyleaf with the suffix "leaf" in honor of Leafpool. She was a highly dedicated warrior and continued to carry on with the prophecy. When there was a fire in the forest, she and her brothers were rescued by Squirrelflight and Ashfur.

However, when a tree was pushed down to save them, Ashfur stopped and threatened to kill them. This is when Hollyleaf found out that Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw were not her true parents. She became scared of thunderstorms too from the confrontation. She desperately tried to find her real parents and found out that they were Leafpool and Crowfeather of WindClan.

This broke her, and when she tries to stop Ashfur from telling, she slit his throat and he fell into the river. She did not mean for him to die. She ran away when she revealed the secret and "died" in the collapsing tunnels. She was saved by Fallen Leaves and lived in the tunnels for moons and moons. One day, she returned to ThunderClan and died saving Ivypool from Hawkfrost, taking the killing blow. She forgave Leafpool in the end; her last plea of forgiveness which had already been granted.

  • Squirrelflight requested the -leaf suffix for Hollyleaf because she was thinking of Leafpool.[8]
  • Hollyleaf has been described as the spitting image of her father, Crowfeather, and was almost given his prefix, but Squirrelflight suggested "Holly" because her pelt was as dark as a holly branch.[9]
  • Hollyleaf has never had powers, and the third cat in the prophecy was Dovewing.[8]
  • Hollyleaf is a descendant of the first WindClan leader, Windstar, because her father, Crowfeather, is descended from her.[10]
  • She is scared of thunderstorms because of the confrontation with Ashfur.[11]
  • Hollyleaf was going to be one of the Three at first, but by book four, Vicky couldn't think of a power that fit her, so she decided not to make her one of the Three.[8]
  • Vicky also confirmed that Hollyleaf is the "Forgotten Warrior".[12]
  • Kate Cary confirmed on her Twitter that Hollyleaf and Fallen Leaves did love one another,[13] and if they met in StarClan, they would be mates.[14] She had earlier confirmed, however, that Fallen Leaves and Hollyleaf did indeed meet again in StarClan.[15] However, Vicky has said on multiple occasions that Hollyleaf and Fallen Leaves are not mates.[16][17]
  • According to Vicky, Hollyleaf was at Bramblestar's nine lives ceremony, but couldn't give him a life due to "obvious reasons".[18]
  • Kate thinks that Ashfur forgave Hollyleaf for killing him once she joined StarClan.[19] This is contradicted by Vicky, who says they probably never forgave each other and avoid each other in StarClan.[20]
  • Vicky revealed in Erin Hunter's Confidential Notes that Hollyleaf died in The Last Hope to allow her to make the ultimate sacrifice in saving a Clanmate to show that she was still loyal to her Clan.[21]
  • When Bramblestar stood up for Hollyleaf, calling Ashfur's death a mistake, it was revealed by Vicky that he had never actually seen Hollyleaf kill Ashfur- he was just making the best deduction he could.[22]
